Based on estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), it’s only been about eight months since the first case of the coronavirus was confirmed in the country. During this time, Chinese infectious disease specialists and other scientists confirmed that the fast-spreading infection in Wuhan, China, was caused by SARS-CoV-2, a new type of coronavirus. In this short time, the race in the U.S. has been to learn as much as possible about the previously unknown virus and how it affects people. One monumental and disturbing thing that has been learned is the uneven toll that the virus has taken on some people but not others. Black and Latino people have been three times as likely as white people to become infected with COVID-19 and twice as likely to die, according to federal data obtained via a lawsuit by The New York Times.
